From a life-changing visit to The Gambia to a growing movement empowering communities across continents this is how our journey began.
A Life-Changing Visit
Empowering Communities For Life (ECFL) is a UK registered charity founded in 2016 by Dr Laura Ricketts following a life-changing visit to The Gambia. Whilst in The Gambia, she experienced the warmth, generosity and rich culture of the Gambian people.
However, she also witnessed the significant challenges faced by many communities, including poverty, limited educational opportunities, inadequate access to essential resources and a lack of support for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
Empowering Communities Since 2016
Building From the Ground Up
Inspired to make a meaningful and sustainable contribution, Dr Ricketts returned to the United Kingdom determined to build an organisation that would work alongside communities rather than simply provide short-term aid.
Beginning with the collection of donated educational resources and fundraising within local schools and the wider community, ECFL quickly established relationships with schools, community leaders and partner organisations in The Gambia.
Since its formation, ECFL has grown into a volunteer-led “Grassroots” charity; we are powered by volunteers who are also humanitarians, social activists, and everyday people who want to have a positive impact in the lives of others.
Expanding Our Impact
ECFL works collaboratively with communities to improve educational outcomes, promote health and wellbeing, support vulnerable families and encourage sustainable community development. Every project is designed with local people, ensuring that support is culturally appropriate, community-led and focused on creating lasting impact.
Although our roots remain firmly established in The Gambia, ECFL is now preparing to extend its work through the development of the JAM:ED programme in Jamaica, applying the same principles of partnership, inclusion and sustainability that have guided the charity since its inception.
